Description:

The stamp drawings explore the performance and regulation of emotional expression, in both personal and work-related experiences. The phrase “THANK YOU”, which could be sincere and/or purely transactional, is stamped repetitively by hand, yet visually maintains the regularity of a machine. The repetition draws attention to the intentional use, sincerity, and frequency with which people deploy the phrase. The nature of delivery may vary widely, as spoken by a close friend, or as seen at the end of a paper receipt.

The stamp, as a bureaucratic tool, also references how the phrase may be used in an employed labor context. In a client-facing role or between peers, the phrase “thank you” may be simultaneously genuine, reflexive, and obligatory. The ambiguity that arises from the sincerity and disciplined use of the phrase (and performance of its sentiment) is a main conceptual interest in this artwork.
